Triple Fatalities Reported in El Paso Traffic Crashes Over Weekend
A deadly weekend in El Paso has claimed the lives of three men in separate traffic crashes, bringing the total number of traffic fatalities to 15 this year.
The first incident occurred on Friday, March 21, when a pedestrian, Jesus Fernando Perez, 52, was killed in a hit-and-run collision on North Loop Drive next to the El Paso Community College Valle Verde campus. Perez was walking to a bus stop when he was struck by an unknown vehicle heading east on North Loop Drive.
On Saturday, March 22, a 19-year-old man died when his car burst into flames after crashing into electrical poles in a Northwest El Paso neighborhood. The driver was speeding in a 2019 Volkswagen GTI when he veered off the street and crashed into a large rock and electrical poles.
In the third incident, Christopher Adrian Martinez, 31, was killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash on Loop 375 in far East El Paso on Sunday, March 23. Martinez lost control of his 2014 Kia Soul, spun off the highway, and hit a metal fence pole, causing the Kia to roll and land on its passenger side.
The Special Traffic Investigations Unit suspects alcohol was a factor in the Loop 375 crash. The hit-and-run incident remains unsolved, and the police are investigating all three incidents.
The 15 traffic fatalities in El Paso this year compare to 13 in the same period last year, according to a police news release.
