Arul Carasala Death-Obituary: Kansas Priest Fatally Shot; Suspect Arrested
A tragic incident unfolded in Seneca, Kansas, where a priest was fatally shot outside his church rectory. Authorities have arrested 66-year-old Gary L. Hermesch of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in connection with the killing.
The shooting occurred outside Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church rectory at 411 Pioneer Street in Seneca, approximately 60 miles north of Topeka. Father Arul Carasala, a beloved priest who served the community since 2011, was the victim.
Hermesch was booked into the Nemaha County Jail on suspected first-degree murder and officially charged Thursday evening.
Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann expressed heartfelt condolences on social media, calling the incident a “senseless act of violence” that has left the parish grieving. He prayed for the victim’s family, the community, and even the perpetrator.
Father Carasala was ordained in 1994 in India and had served in Kansas since 2004. He became a U.S. citizen in 2011 and had been the priest at Saints Peter and Paul since then.
The community is in shock, and an investigation is ongoing. The archbishop’s message emphasizes the need for prayer and support during this difficult time.
