A vehicle fire on Interstate 696 caused significant delays for morning commuters in the Farmington Hills-Southfield area on Monday. The incident, which occurred shortly after 4 a.m., blocked all eastbound lanes of I-696 after I-275 in Oakland County, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Emergency responders were quickly on the scene, but the eastbound lanes remained closed until at least 9:50 a.m., causing lengthy backups for motorists. Drivers reported waiting an hour or more in traffic, with eastbound traffic being diverted onto Orchard Lake Road.
In a separate incident, a crash on westbound I-696 at Southfield Road was reported by MDOT at 6:47 a.m., resulting in the closure of all but the right lane.
This is a developing story. This post will be updated as soon as more information is released.
