DUBLIN, IRELAND – A 34-year-old Nigerian asylum seeker and former footballer, Quaham Babatunde, was fatally stabbed in Dublin’s city center on Saturday morning.
According to eyewitnesses, Babatunde was attacked on South Anne Street during a violent altercation that began over a dispute at a local club. A masked man was seen wielding a large knife, and Babatunde was stabbed in the chest.
Friends described Babatunde as a peacemaker who was trying to rebuild his life. He had recently taken an exam to work as a security guard in Ireland and had no prior involvement in the altercation.
Babatunde’s football career was marred by legal troubles, including a rape allegation in Italy and an arrest for brawling and immigration violations.
An investigation by An Garda Síochána has led to multiple arrests, including a 23-year-old suspect apprehended in Belfast.
The tragic killing has raised concerns about violence in Dublin’s nightlife and the plight of asylum seekers abroad.
