Gunfire Erupts in Waikiki, Hawaii, Leaving Residents and Tourists Shaken
A chaotic scene unfolded in the heart of Waikiki, Hawaii, on Sunday night as gunfire broke out, striking businesses in the state’s most popular tourism district.
According to eyewitnesses, people were seen scrambling to dodge bullets, with one resident describing the scene as “nuts.”
The Honolulu Police Department is investigating the incident as an attempted murder after two men exchanged gunfire. A large bullet hole was visible in the glass at the H&M clothing store on Monday.
While gun violence is rare in the neighborhood, residents are shaken by the incident. “I’ve never seen any shooting or anything like that throughout my life,” said Waikiki resident Anessa Rodriguez. “So now hearing that there’s a shooting in Waikiki, it has me a little bit scared.”
Rick Egged, president of the Waikiki Improvement Association, emphasized that the incident is isolated and that Waikiki remains safe for both residents and visitors. “Any kind of violent crime in Waikiki is very rare,” Egged said. “Most of our crime tends to be of the shoplifting nature.”
The incident has raised concerns about safety in the area, but authorities are working to reassure the public that Waikiki is still a secure destination.
