
14-Year-Old Kelli Schmitz Killed in Car Accident in Jesup
Jesup, Iowa – A tragic car accident claimed the life of 14-year-old Kelli Schmitz of Jesup, early Tuesday morning.
According to a press release from the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at 7:13 am on February 25, 2025, in the 8000 block of Poyner Road. A Jeep Cherokee and a Pontiac Sunfire were involved in the collision.
Kelli Schmitz, the driver of the Sunfire, was trapped inside the vehicle and sustained critical injuries. She was transported to MercyOne Waterloo, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The driver of the Jeep, 22-year-old Kelsey Murphy of La Porte City, exited the vehicle, which was fully engulfed in flames, and was transported to the hospital with minor non-life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation, with assistance from Gilbertville first responders, Evansdale Fire & Ambulance, Iowa State Patrol, MercyOne Ambulance, and Aircare.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been established to support Kelli’s family with funeral expenses and a memorial in her honor. As of Thursday morning, over $38,000 has been raised.
The fundraiser description reads: “Kelli was a bright light in their lives, and her passing has left them heartbroken. As they navigate this devastating time, we hope to ease their financial burden by raising funds for funeral expenses and a memorial in her honor.”
