Seward County, KS – A tragic accident early Sunday morning has claimed the life of a 16-year-old driver from Liberal.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the incident occurred just before 2 a.m. at the intersection of County Road 9 and US-83. Augustus Riley, the teenage driver, was behind the wheel of a Dodge Charger when he failed to stop at the intersection.
The vehicle became airborne, landing to the east of the highway, and lost control, entering a side skid before crashing into the south ditch. The Charger rolled multiple times before coming to a stop after striking a power pole.
Sadly, Riley, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, died at the scene.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, and no further details have been released at this time.
The community is mourning the loss of the young driver, and authorities are reminding drivers of the importance of safe driving practices, especially at intersections.
It’s a pity. Rip
