A severe traffic alert has been issued for drivers heading to Gatwick Airport after a crash involving three cars and a lorry closed the M23 in Surrey.
The southbound carriageway is shut between junctions J9 (Gatwick) and J10 (Crawley) following the multi-vehicle collision, which occurred earlier today.
Sussex Police warn that the motorway will remain closed for “some time” and advise motorists to avoid the area if possible.
All emergency services, including the South East Coast Ambulance Service, are at the scene, along with traffic officers.
Four patients were assessed and treated at the scene, with three later taken to East Surrey Hospital for further checks and treatment.
Heavy congestion is building in the area, with traffic snarling back for miles towards the M25. Drivers are advised to expect severe delays and seek alternative routes.
The crash has left debris and spillage on the carriageway, adding to the traffic disruption.
