Matt Stevens Death-Obituary: Former NFL Defensive Back Matt Stevens Dies at 51
The Houston Texans and the NFL community are mourning the loss of former defensive standout Matt Stevens, who passed away on March 20th at the age of 51.
Stevens, a Chapel Hill, North Carolina native and Appalachian State alumnus, had a notable NFL career, playing for five teams, including the Texans, Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, and New England Patriots.
During his time with the Patriots, Stevens played a crucial role in their first Super Bowl victory. He also had a notable season with Washington in 1999, recording six interceptions.
Stevens played his final two seasons with the Texans from 2002-2003, starting 32 games and notching two interceptions. His NFL career was marked by his defensive playmaking abilities.
Tragically, Stevens suffered a motorcycle accident in 2007 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. However, through rehabilitation and specialized care, he regained mobility by 2011.
A memorial service for Stevens will take place on Friday, March 28, at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Chapel Hill. His family released a statement, remembering him as a beloved son and father.
The New England Patriots also paid tribute to Stevens, saying they are “deeply saddened” by his passing.
