Hawaii, USA – Professional surfer Makai McNamara is in a coma after a devastating wipeout at Banzai Pipeline, one of the most treacherous surf breaks globally. McNamara, an experienced surfer familiar with the spot, was knocked unconscious by a large wave on February 23.
Eyewitness and fellow pro-surfer Eli Olson described the incident as a “freak accident,” stating that McNamara went head-first into the reef. Olson, who helped rescue McNamara, recalled the surfer being underwater for nearly two minutes before he could reach him.
McNamara was administered CPR and taken to the hospital, where he was placed in an induced coma for 72 hours. His father, Liam, shared an update on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the support and thanking lifeguards and those who helped save his son.
The family has requested that video footage of the rescue not be shared online, citing stress caused by its circulation. McNamara’s friend and rescuer, Eli Olson, emphasized that the rescue was a team effort and wished for McNamara’s full recovery.
McNamara remains hospitalized, with his family seeking continued prayers and positive energy for his recovery.
