Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has urged the immediate reopening of markets affected by the closure of Onitsha’s Head Bridge Market. The market was shut down due to alleged illegal drug trading in the Ogbo Ogwu section.
Obi condemned the sale of illicit drugs, emphasizing the need for fairness in law enforcement. He stated, “One unequivocally condemns such illicit drug trading activities and urges the government to take all necessary measures to eradicate the sale of fake items—especially drugs—and legally prosecute the perpetrators for the health and safety of society.”
The former governor highlighted the severe impact of the market’s continued closure on the livelihoods of millions, particularly during Nigeria’s current economic difficulties. He also advocated for transparency in shop inspections, urging authorities to involve store owners in the process.
Recalling his tenure as Anambra governor, Obi shared his approach to handling similar situations, emphasizing collaboration with relevant agencies and ensuring fairness and due process.
Obi urged the state government to reconsider its current strategy, adopting a more balanced and transparent approach to enhance both security and economic stability. He stressed the need to weigh public health measures against their economic impact.
