A Life of Art and Service
Born in Watertown, South Dakota, Weagel grew up in Lake Crystal, Minnesota, and developed a strong interest in the arts during his time at Mankato State University. He began his career as a glass artist in the 1970s, becoming a fixture at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, where he gave live glassblowing demonstrations. Weagel’s talent, innovation, and generosity in sharing his knowledge earned him recognition as one of the country’s leading glass artists.

A Commitment to Community
Weagel’s commitment to his community was evident in his various endeavors. He co-founded the Pequot Lakes High School trap shooting team, coached for Pine River-Backus and Central Lakes College, and taught hunter safety classes for over a decade. His love for the outdoors and nature was reflected in his enjoyment of hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time in nature.
A Legacy of Creativity and Inspiration
After stepping away from glass in 1988, Weagel maintained 37 years of sobriety and mentored others through AA. He later explored steel sculpture and mixed-media work, opening a welding shop and featuring his art in various shows. Weagel’s passion for creativity and inspiration remained strong, and he often said, “I live the dream every day.”
A Celebration of Life
A celebration of Weagel’s life will be held on Sunday, June 22, at 2:00 p.m. at The Journey Church in Nisswa, Minnesota. Weagel is survived by his loving partner, Kim Olesen; daughters Mara Powers and Alicia Weagel; grandchildren Hannah, Griffin, and Rowan; sisters Sandra Burbank and Shari Hagen; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
