Plane Crashes into Water Off Roatan Island, Honduras, Killing at Least 7
A devastating plane crash occurred on Monday just off the coast of Roatan Island, Honduras, resulting in the loss of at least seven lives.
The plane, a Jetstream aircraft operated by Honduran carrier Lanhsa, took off from Roatan Island but crashed into the water approximately one kilometer from the coast.
According to Major Wilmer Guerrero of the fire department, 10 people were rescued from the crash site, but six were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The body of a crew member was later found floating in the sea near the wreckage.
The plane was carrying 17 passengers, including three crew members, and was headed to the La Ceiba airport on the Honduran mainland. Among the passengers were a US national, a French national, and two minors.
Recovery and rescue efforts have been challenging due to the plane’s location in the sea, according to Lisandro Muñoz, the island’s police chief.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway.
