NASHVILLE, Tenn (WTVF) — A shooting that started as a robbery in the parking lot of Green Hills Mall on Tuesday afternoon left one person dead and caused major traffic delays for commuters.
According to Metro Nashville Police (MNPD), the incident began around 2:30 p.m. when a man carrying Louis Vuitton bags was confronted by a suspect in the parking lot. The suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Omari Moore, approached the shopper while a second man waited in a Tesla nearby.
Witnesses and surveillance footage show Moore getting out of the car and trying to rob the shopper, which led to the fatal shooting.
Don Aaron, MNPD Public Affairs Director said, “We can obviously see the confrontation between the shopper and the passenger of the vehicle,”
After the attempted robbery, the Tesla driver circled back to pick up Moore, and it’s believed that the driver was shot at this point.
Moore, a convicted felon, claims he didn’t know his accomplice had been shot.
As the vehicle sped away, the victim reportedly chased after it and threw a gun magazine at the Tesla. Investigators recovered the magazine and two spent shell casings from the parking lot.
The suspects fled the scene, but the Tesla driver lost control and crashed into a tree along the I-65 northbound entrance ramp from I-440 shortly after leaving the mall parking lot.
Following the crash, MNPD reports that Moore exited the wrecked vehicle and discarded an automatic pistol without a magazine, which was later found by police. He was arrested at the scene after an officer witnessed the crash. The driver, whose identity has not been released, was found dead with at least one gunshot wound.
Authorities are still trying to identify the robbery victim, who left before police arrived. Detectives are asking him to come forward to help clarify the events of the confrontation.
The investigation continues as police try to determine how the driver was fatally shot. Moore, who has a criminal record, was convicted in 2022 for burglary and felony theft, and also has convictions in Henderson County for theft and evading arrest.
