Massive Evacuation in St Leonards-on-Sea After Explosive Chemicals Found
A major incident was declared in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, after emergency services discovered explosive chemicals at a waterfront property on Thursday.
The alarming find led to the evacuation of 73 residents, including children, from the A259 Marina road area. They were relocated to a nearby hotel.
A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of producing illegal substances and making an explosive substance. A 100m cordon was established around the area.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team confirmed that the chemicals posed a threat to life and carried out a controlled burn of the materials. Operations are ongoing to make an additional 500 canisters safe.
The evacuation has raised concerns about the potential cancellation of the Hastings Half Marathon, scheduled for Sunday. It is unclear when the displaced residents will be allowed to return home.
