
A Michigan City police officer shot and killed a suspect who fled on foot during a traffic stop on Friday evening, around 5:30 p.m. The incident occurred in the 5800 block of South Franklin Street, where an officer initiated a traffic stop on a red Dodge SUV for an equipment violation.
The suspect, who was armed, ran from the scene, prompting officers to pursue him. One of the officers fired his weapon, hitting the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at Franciscan Health Hospital in Michigan City.
The investigation is ongoing, with detectives reviewing body camera and in-car videos. Michigan City Police Chief Marty Corley has placed the involved officer(s) on paid administrative leave, following department policies. Indiana State Police are leading the investigation, with Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch expressing confidence in their ability to conduct a thorough and transparent review.
