A Toronto police officer, Detective Constable Christian Campoli, has been charged with aggravated assault after a 33-year-old man was seriously injured during an arrest in downtown Toronto last summer. The incident occurred on August 3, near Victoria Street Lane and Dundas Street East.
According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the man was hospitalized with serious injuries after being pushed by an officer during the arrest. The SIU investigation found reasonable grounds to believe that Campoli committed a criminal offence during the incident.
Campoli is scheduled to appear in court on March 18 in the Ontario Court of Justice. The SIU has declined to comment further on the investigation as the matter is before the courts.
The incident occurred while police were making an arrest for possession and trafficking of fentanyl. A third party interfered, leading to an altercation with another police officer, according to Jon Reid, former president of the Toronto Police Association.
