Tourist Submarine Sinks Off Egypt’s Red Sea Coast, Killing Six and Injuring 21
A devastating incident occurred on Thursday when a tourist submarine sank near the Egyptian resort city of Hurghada, resulting in the loss of six lives and injuring 21 others. The tragedy sparked a frantic rescue effort, with 39 people rescued from the Red Sea waters, according to Egyptian authorities cited by Reuters.
The incident happened at 10:00 a.m. local time, when the submarine crashed approximately 1 km from the shore while on a regular underwater excursion to explore the coral reef. Most of the passengers were Russian vacationers, the Russian embassy and RIA Novosti reported.
Among the injured, seven children aged between two and 15 were hospitalized. The Russian embassy and Egyptian state-run media confirmed that the deceased were foreign nationals.
Hurghada, a popular beach town on Egypt’s Red Sea coast, is known for its well-established submarine tour operations, which offer explorations of the region’s dramatic seabed.
An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
