
Several Injured in Berbice River Bridge Access Road Crash
East Canje, Berbice – A devastating collision on the Berbice River Bridge Access Road on Wednesday has claimed the life of 19-year-old Annalisa Smith and left several others injured.
The fatal accident occurred at approximately 12:20hrs when motor car #PSS 6725, driven by 21-year-old Clifton Smith, lost control while traveling west at an allegedly excessive speed. The vehicle collided with a unity pole on the southern side of the road.
Annalisa Smith, a rear-seat passenger, sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Despite prompt medical attention, she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body is currently at the hospital’s mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
The other occupants of the vehicle, including Marlyn Jones, 60, Odessa Smith, 49, Simon Gomes, 43, and a unity pole owner associated with Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), are receiving treatment for various injuries.
A breathalyzer test conducted at the scene revealed no alcohol in the driver’s system. Clifton Smith is in police custody as investigators probe the circumstances surrounding the tragic crash.
